GRANDPA WAS DRIVING THROUGH TOWN ONE DAY
AND SAW GRANDMA, IN HER YELLOW DRESS
WALKING ALONG AT THE CORNER OF MAIN STREET.
My Grandfather went straight home to ask his cousin,
"who was that beautiful girl?"
Before long Hattie & Howard were dating and not long after that they married.
They were devoted to one another.
Hearing the stories of how my Grandparents treated each other over the course of their marriage gave me faith in the power of love from a young age.
My Grandfather went off to war and they wrote each other love letters. At one point during the war my Grandfather was the sole survivor of a plane that crashed in Burma. He carved my Grandma a heart necklace from the windshield of the wreckage. He also brought back the material of the parachute and from it my Grandmother made Christmas stockings – the whole family has stockings made from this sacred material.
The Gardenhouse represents deep, enduring,
One day Grandma was looking through a magazine and found a drawing of the gardenhouse.
She commented how cute it was and how handy it would be to have out back. A few days later she came home to find my grandfather building it for her in the backyard.
My Grandmother's Gardenhouse had trellises, shutters,
window boxes full of coleus, curtains, a brick patio, and most importantly,
